This text file is to help you navigate through LIGHT-ROM & explain all
the categories of data.
The LIGHTWAVE directory - contains Lightwave objects, scene files, surface
attributes and text files. The Lightwave objects can also be
used with trueSpace by Calligari for the PC. The objects have
a ".LW" suffix. The Scene files have a ".SCN" suffix. Surface
attributes have an ".ATT" suffix. Arexx Scripts have a ".REX"
suffix. There are a few scene files that do not have all of
the objects, images or textures that are requested. In these
cases, this is how they were obtained and not a mistake on my
part. A couple of the scene files would work fine with 3.5 &
be flaky on 3.1.
The GEO directory - contains objects in the GEO format, used with Videoscape
3D.These objects load directly into Lightwave without the use
of the TIO converters.Another use for these objects for these
objects is that they can be directly imported into Scenery
Animator 4.0 for the Amiga. Scenery Animator is available for
different platforms, but I'm not sure whether they can accept
these objects.
The SCULPT directory - contains objects in the Sculpt format. These objects
were generated by the versions of Sculpt for the Amiga. They
are supposed to be the same format as the Sculpt programs for
the Mac. These objects can also be loaded into Lightwave
through the TIO converters. The Sculpt objects ended with a
".scenes" suffix, so do not confuse their ".SCN" suffix
with that of Lightwave's scene files.
The IMAGINE directory -contains objects in the Imagine format. These objects
can be used with both the Amiga and PC versions of Imagine.
They should be compatible with the SGI version, once it is
released. Some of these objects were generated with Turbo
Silver, Imagine's predecessor. These objects were included as
a bonus to help fill out LIGHT-ROM.Someday they will be moved
to their own CD ROM.
The IMAGES directory - consists of a variety of images in JPeg, IFF and
Targa formats. These images are to be used as background
images for desktop video titling and applications, or however
you see fit!
The TEXTURE directory - consists of a variety of textures in JPeg, IFF and
Targa formats. These textures are great to use with any 3D
programs that accept any of these three file formats. They can
also be used as bump maps.
The BUMP MAP directory - contains a variety of black & white images
specifically designed to be used as bump maps. They come in
JPeg, IFF and Targa formats.
The DEM directory-contains a variety of DEMs(digital elevation maps) which
can be used by Vista Pro and Scenery Animator on any platform.
They can also be used with 3D object translators such as Pixel
Pro(Amiga) or Interchange Plus(multiplatform) to convert into
3D landscapes in any format that the translators support.
The TOASTER directory-consists of a selection of old style CG fonts for the
Video Toaster's CG program. There is another selection of old
style Video Toaster wipes. There have been problems getting
wipes created with one program or system to work with another.
There is no guarantee that these will work with your system &
are included for your amusement and entertainment.
TEXT FILES - Collections of text files included with LIGHT-ROM that
cover Lightwave 3D, the Video Toaster and Imagine. These text
files consist of dialog taken from BBS's and the Internet. They
are a valuable resource of information by many of the
professionals and include a lot of useful tips, advice and
techniques.
INDEX directories-are found in each subdirectory of the Lightwave directory.
They consist of a variety of thumbnail renderings to give you
an indication of what each file looks like when rendered. They
are there to save you time rendering each item just to
see what they look like. The index files are all at 640x400 in
Targa, IFF Hires(16 color) and IFF HAM8(256,000 colors). On the
Amiga, they are useful to load into a directory utility program
such as Directory Opus, although several public domain programs
will work just as well. These index directories are also found
in the main Image and Bump Maps directories as well as the
subdirectories of the textures directory. The next version of
LIGHT-ROM will have these index directories for the GEO &
Sculpt object directories.

Overall, I'm pleased with how this first edition came out! There are
several improvements I wish to make in future editions. The biggest problem
with creating this issue of LIGHT-ROM is following the PC "8.3" filename
guidelines. On complicated scene and object files, I have had to reduce
descriptive file names to something uncomprehensable. Of course, this
defeats the educational purposes of descriptive file names. I hope to have
a solution to this problem sometime in '95.
Postscript fonts for Lightwave and the Video Toaster's CG program
should come in a future of LIGHT-ROM.
I understand that some people's biggest complaint about a collection
like LIGHT-ROM will be the quality of the objects. There are some
outstanding contributions in this issue of LIGHT-ROM. Others are included
because there was nothing else available in their category. If you wish
to contribute to the next issue of LIGHT-ROM and possibly qualify for a
free copy, please write to Amiga Library Services for a submissions form.
I hope you enjoy this issue of LIGHT-ROM. As usual, if you have any
suggestions to improve LIGHT-ROM, please write.
Thank You,
Michael Meshew
